Rule Your Mind or It Will Rule You

One of the major keys to living a happy life is to have a disciplined mind. I know, the idea of ‘disciplining’ oneself is not very attractive, however, the initial effort required to do so is well worth the rewards that come after. Just imagine having a mind that habitually focuses on the good in life, a mind that automatically thinks thoughts that make you happy. The secret to an ‘effortless’ life is self-discipline!

Ironically, an effortless life must be earned through effort.

Now, don’t worry. I’m going to make things as easy as possible for you by giving you simple but powerful techniques and strategies throughout the rest of this short guide.

How am I qualified to share this with you? Well, for most of my life, I suffered with severe anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. Today, my life is very different. I have peace of mind, self-confidence, and true freedom, however, none of this happened by chance. It all happened by design. I shaped my own destiny using the power within my very own mind, heart, and soul, and YOU can do the same.

The TV Screen of Mind

The first step to changing anything in your life is to change your perception of it. For example, to change the thoughts in your mind, you need a better understanding of your mind and how it really works.

You need different thoughts about your thoughts!

If you can see things differently, you can then do things differently and therefore get different results in your life. This is why reading books like this is so incredibly important. It helps you see things from different perspectives, which then opens up whole new realms of possibility for you.

Think of your mind like a TV screen, and you own the remote control to this television. The remote control is your ‘will’ or the power of your ‘intention’. If you truly desire to, you can change the channel of your mind and play a different show, can’t you? Why not try it now? Think of something that makes you happy. I’ll wait…

How hard was that? Not too hard. It only required a small exertion of your willpower to change the channel and think about something good. Now, imagine if your mind was always on that channel! You’d be happy all the time, wouldn’t you? As long as you know how to direct your mind at will, you can remain in 100% control of your own thoughts and emotional states. It is a choice!

Now here’s the simple secret to your success…

You must re-direct your mind to things that empower and uplift you over and over and over again until you have created a new mental habit of positivity.

This is a very simple truth. Happiness is a habit. Negativity can be a habit also. You’re not “better” or “worse” than anyone else because of your habits of thinking. Your habits are not who you are. Your habits are just habits and habits can be changed!

 

The Powerful 30-Second Mental Reprogramming Technique

The process I am about to share with you is a very simple one but is extremely powerful when done consistently. It is the same exact process I used many years ago to eliminate 90% or more of my feelings of stress and anxiety, so I know how well this stuff works. Apply it and you will see for yourself how something so simple can lead to such dramatic changes.

Since negative thinking is a habit of the mind, the only way to overcome it is by reprogramming the mind so that it operates in a different way. Think of it like a computer. The real you is the computer hardware. It just sits there silently, unchanged. The thoughts running through your mind are the software. Right now, you have defective software in your computer. It’s time for an upgrade! But before you can install a new software, you have to uninstall the old one. That leads us into the first steps of the reprogramming process…

Step 1. Recognize the defect and observe it carefully.

The defect is the negative thought. You have to recognize the presence of the negative thought in order to eliminate it. You can’t change something when you are not even aware that it exists. So, how do you recognize when negative thoughts are happening? Pay attention to your feelings. Your feelings are a valuable compass. They show you whether positive or negative things are going on in your mind. The presence of a negative feeling should trigger you to STOP everything and pay attention to what’s happening in your mind. This is the first step and it’s a very important one because positive change requires first and foremost self-awareness.

The natural tendency is to distract ourselves when negative thoughts or feelings come into awareness. We will immediately do something else to avoid facing our inner negativity. We’ll watch television, play on our phone, eat something, read something, talk to someone, ANYTHING other than acknowledging the painful thought or feeling. This does not help matters at all in the long term. It only perpetuates these feelings because all you are doing is suppressing them temporarily. Those feelings will come up again at a later time unless you learn how to completely release them as they arise. This is in fact the only way to ensure that those feelings disappear from your life forever. All other methods are temporary solutions at best. I suggest you don’t waste your time…

So, when a negative thought or feeling comes into your awareness, the first step is to recognize it and face it. Look into the feeling, not away from it. An easy way to do this is to simply ask yourself the question, “How am I feeling right now, and would I allow myself to feel it fully?” Close your eyes and go within yourself. Take some deep breaths. Feel the sensations in your body, no matter how unpleasant they may be. Don’t judge yourself. You are not wrong for feeling the way you do. Give yourself full 100% permission to feel that way. The key here is recognition and then acceptance. After acceptance comes surrender…

Step 2. Surrender the feeling behind the thoughts (uninstall the defective software).

Before you can reprogram the mind, you have to deprogram it. When you change the oil in your car, do you simply pour clean oil in on top of the old dirty oil? No! You drain the old oil and then you pour in the new oil. Your vehicle is going to perform a whole lot better if you do it this way. Likewise, your mind is going to work more in your favor if you empty out the old before putting in the new.

The process of surrender is deceivingly simple. Many people try it and say, “It’s not working.” These people are simply trying way too hard. This is one of the simplest yet most powerful methods for personal transformation that you can possibly incorporate into your life. Here’s a simplified version of the emotional release process:

1. Recognize the negative thought or emotion. If it’s a thought you notice, don’t focus on the thought but go within to the sensation of the feeling that is behind the thoughts.

2. Spend at least 20-30 seconds with eyes closed feeling the physical sensations within your body as the feelings flow through you. Take some deep breaths and just focus on the feelings as best you can.

3. Ask yourself, “Would I let this feeling go in return for a feeling of inner peace? When?” Then, take a deep breath and give yourself permission to release the emotion.

Key point: you must give yourself permission. If you are rationalizing a reason for why you should not let go, then you will not let go. You have to let go of your ideas that say the emotion is justified and just choose to let it all go regardless of what you think about it. Trust me, it’s worth it.

4. Repeat this process whenever you are aware of a feeling that you’d rather get rid of. In most cases, the emotion can be released very easily by simply asking yourself the question in step 3 and perhaps combining it with some deep breaths. Imagine holding onto the feeling on the inhale and imagine yourself letting it go on the exhale. Do this as many times as you need to until you feel better.

If you do this simple process, you should be able to lift yourself out of negative emotional states very quickly. Like I said, this process is extremely simple but please don’t overlook the power of it just because of its simplicity. Practice this as many times as you need to. It might take a few tries before you notice the benefits, but if you keep doing it, you’ll be amazed at how much this simple technique can transform your life.

Now that you’ve learned how to recognize and release negative thoughts and feelings, there is only one step left: the mental reprogramming process. Adding in this next step is optional. You might already feel amazing from the emotional release process, but if you want even greater benefits, move on to step 3…

Step 3. Reprogram the mind with what you desire to be, do, or have (install the new software).

The mind is creative. Just look at the world we live in. Everything you see in this man-made world began in the mind of a single individual. If you truly recognize the significance of this fact, you will begin to take your own imagination a lot more seriously. If you want to be a certain way—more confident, for example—then you must create a mental habit that automatically gives you those feelings. If you want to create something in your life—a thriving business perhaps—then you must create mental habits that will automatically drive you in that direction. Whatever you hold in mind is what you will eventually create and/or become.

As I mentioned previously, before you can reprogram the mind, you must deprogram it. This is why the emotional release process is so important. After doing a quick emotional release is the very best time to start implanting positive thoughts into your mind. So, just take a minute to consider the question, “If I could be, do, or have absolutely anything I desired, what would it be and what exactly would it look like?” Try to form a clear mental picture of it now. Imagine who you would be if you could have any personality traits or characteristics you desired. Imagine what you would do with your life if you knew you could not fail. Imagine your life exactly as you want it to be, with no compromises or limitations. This is your chance to think BIG. Try it now.

Now that you have a clear picture of what you want, try to bring more life to that picture. Close your eyes and imagine you were in a movie theater looking at a giant screen that shows your life story as if your life was already perfect and exactly as you wanted it to be. Bring lots of color and movement to the picture. Go through it a few times in your mind until it becomes much more vivid and realistic. You’ll know you’re doing it right when you start to feel really good about it. Replay this movie a few times until you can see it clearly in your mind.

Okay, so now you have a general idea of what you want to do, be, or have in your life and you have taken the time to turn that desire into a mental movie in your mind. This is a good start, but you should also know that you will need to practice this mental movie over and over again until it becomes crystal clear and extremely realistic. You will need to refine this mental movie over time as your desires change. This mental movie is going to become your new obsession from now on. You must make time every single day to play this movie in your head because this is what you’ll be reprogramming your mind with. When you repeat this mental movie over and over again, it will gradually sink into the unconscious mind and when it is finally fully implanted in the deeper layers of your mind is when you will witness some very dramatic positive changes in your life. Don’t take my word on this. Just do it and you will see!

You’ve already learned some incredibly powerful techniques. Here’s a quick summary of the information:

  1. Use negative thoughts and emotions as a trigger that gets you to STOP everything and pay close attention to what is going on within you. Do not distract yourself with something outside of you. Go within to the source of your negative thoughts and emotions if you truly want to be rid of them. Suppression or distraction will never work. You want permanent solutions, not temporary ones.
  2. Use the basic emotional release process to brings yourself into a more relaxed and accepting state of mind. Ask yourself, “Would I let this feeling go in return for a feeling of inner peace? When?” Then, take a deep breath and give yourself permission to release the emotion. Do this several times until you feel a sense of peace.
  3. After doing the emotional release, replay the mental movie of your ideal life several times. Close your eyes if convenient and try to see your life as if you were already living your wildest dreams. See all the details of it and try to really feel what it would feel like to live that life. Do this for as long as possible. The longer you hold the image in mind, the more quickly you will program the subconscious mind and the more noticeable the benefits will be.
  4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 until all your dreams are a reality!
